INTERSOLAR 2014: SEVEN YEARS AND BIGGER THAN EVER

INTERSOLAR 2014: SEVEN YEARS AND BIGGER THAN EVER

Photos and slideshow by Marcus Siu

SAN FRANCISCO, July 16, 2014 – Intersolar North America, the most well attended solar industry exhibition and conference in North America, successfully concluded its seventh annual show in the heart of the United States’ largest solar market. Over the course of three days, more than 17,000 visitors from 74 countries visited 530 exhibitors, and saw the latest innovations in the photovoltaic, energy storage, balance of systems, mounting and tracking systems, and solar heating and cooling market sectors.

In his keynote address, California Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. characterized the solar industry as the next Gold Rush, speaking to the economic benefits the industry can deliver as it matures. His speech reflected the positive mood on the show floor and at the Intersolar North America conference, which was due, in part, to the strength of the U.S. solar industry. In 2014, the United States is expected to add between 5.2 and 6.3 gigawatts to its total installed capacity, according to NPD SolarBuzz.

“For seven years, Intersolar North America has served as the preeminent venue for solar industry stakeholders to see and discuss the latest innovations shaping global markets — and our 2014 event was no exception,” said Markus Elsässer, CEO of Solar Promotion International GmbH, and Klaus W. Seilnacht, CEO of FMMI International, organizers of Intersolar North America, in a joint statement. “With a bustling exhibition floor, informative conference sessions and unparalleled deal-making opportunities, we once again strengthened our commitment to providing an invaluable experience for our attendees.”

Several exhibitors echoed the positive sentiment that Intersolar North America organizers expressed.

“We’re continuously impressed with the types of individuals we have access to by attending Intersolar,” said Dean Solon, president of Shoals Technologies group. “We’re able to connect with many of the top players to collaborate and drive the industry technologically forward. Which is why, for example, this year at our exhibition booth we launched a new product.”

“LG Solar is committed to offering the best-in-class energy efficient solutions that incorpo-rate advanced technology for our customers, and what better place to share our new products than at Intersolar,” said Ellen Kim, senior vice president, energy solutions, LG Electronics USA, a featured exhibitor at Intersolar North America 2014. “Year after year, we meet with attendees interested in learning more about evolving solar panel technologies and other advanced solutions — from energy storage to bifacial technology. Intersolar is a great opportunity to demonstrate our latest high-efficiency solar module solutions to a key audience of decision makers.”

This year, Intersolar North America expanded its focus on energy storage, project development and financing and downstream market developments. This included more conference sessions on the topic, as well as new offerings to exhibition attendees designed with Intersolar’s robust roster of partners.

In conjunction with the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), 12 exhibitors offered workshops that taught attendees industry best practices, and offered NABCEP credit upon completion. Additionally, with the help of its partner the California Solar Energy Industries Association (CALSEIA), Intersolar North America hosted the first-ever Contractor Day to address the needs of new market entrants and veteran contractors, as well as those looking to add solar installation to their service offering. Intersolar and CALSEIA also announced the two organizations agreed to a five-year extension of their partnership.

“Intersolar North America is a terrific venue to connect with solar professionals and learn valuable insights,” said Bernadette Del Chiaro, executive director of California Solar Energy Industries Association (CALSEIA). “A highlight for CALSEIA this year was honoring CPUC President Michael Peevey with the first-ever Champion of Change AWARD for his years of pro-solar policy making. We hope he’ll continue supporting solar as we move critical policies forward.”

After the energy storage exhibition segment’s successful debut in 2013, the number of energy storage companies this year increased to around 50. Reflecting the important link between solar and energy storage technologies, Intersolar forged a new partnership with the National Alliance for Advanced Technology Batteries (NAATBatt) to better address key concerns of solar developers. In addition to consulting on the development of energy storage conference panels, NAATBatt also hosted a storage workshop that addressed the industry’s challenges and opportunities.

“Our members were stunned and delighted by the intense interest of solar developers and integrators in storage technology,” said James Greenberger, executive director of NAATBatt. “We had to find extra chairs at the last minute for the standing-room only crowds at the NAATBatt Storage Workshop held at the exhibition floor.”

To see more exhibition and conference highlights, watch this IntersolarTV video here. http://www.intersolar.us/en/news-north-america/intersolar-tv.html

THE FUTURE IS HERE – VIRTUAL REALITY GAMING – GDC2014

gdc14_logo

Gamers are checking out the latest “Rift” virtual reality headgear made by Oculus VR at GDC2014 in San Francisco.

Article and photos by Marcus Siu

Over ten years ago, a friend of mine was hired to work on a major big budget Hollywood film and was told not to let anyone know about any details of the movie that he was working on. If he did, he would lose his job. The movie turned out to be Kathryn Bigelow’s Science fiction thriller, “Strange Days”, written by James Cameron. The story involved futuristic virtual-reality headgear that taps into the user’s cerebral cortex touching every nerve. The mini discs clones and records the user’s experience, so that any viewer can experience what was recorded directly from his brain. It was definitely an idea that was way ahead of its time and probably way too incomprehensible for most people to relate to. Though, critically acclaimed, it was a huge commercial flop since it was way over the heads of the mainstream public.

Enter Oculus, VR, a company that makes virtual-reality glasses for PC gaming. They exhibited their latest version of their “Rift” goggles at the Games Developer’s Conference (GDC) at Moscone Center in San Francisco last week. Lines nearly wrapped around the large demo area as highly anticipated geeks waited patiently in line to try out the DK2 (Developer’s Kit 2). You would have thought this company had been around for a long time with the fan base it had already generated, but amazingly, the company is less than two years old.

cIMG_3915

Being a little skeptical, I decided to experience their demo. After being seated in my chair and assisted with my goggles and headset, I was immediately shut off from the outside world and transported into a new one.  Sitting in a virtual-reality space craft, I had the control panel directly in front of me as I was drifting through space. It was surreal. I looked toward the ceiling, below to the floor, and even turned to the back to see the back panels of the space craft. I was part of the reality. Through sight and sound, I was not on earth.

After the immersive experience, the three minute demo was over. My score of zero flashed across the screen. I probably should have taken control of the space craft and shot at things coming at me with the remote that they gave me. I just couldn’t get over the fact that I was in another world and in another reality.  I was shell-shocked, like a deer in front of headlights.

Still, the Oculus “Rift” is a “work-in-progress”. There is some room for improvement on the visual side. The resolution is not quite “retina display” quality. The internal 900 X 1080 LED display is about 1” from the users eyes, so you can see the pixels. In time, as LED resolution technology advances for micro displays, they will be able to overcome its limitations.
DSC_1853

A few sections away at GDC14, Sony PlayStation 4 was demonstrating their “Project Morpheus” at their booth. Their virtual reality headgear looks more like an “Apple” wearable device, that LeVar Burton of Star Trek would prefer due to the gleaming blue neon light and sleek design. It has a more visually appealing look than the bulky Oculus “Rift”.

With Virtual-Reality becoming the wave of the future for gaming, I could imagine it could be used for Skyping, or even viewing movies. I can imagine husbands traveling away on business in another state, sitting across the table chatting with their wife at home at the dinner table, absolutely forgetting that they are in a virtual reality environment.

As David Byrne would sing, “You may ask yourself this isn’t my beautiful home. You may ask yourself this isn’t my beautiful wife. How did I get here?”

Perhaps, in the future, we will be able to put on an Ocular “Rift” to clone the experience what the characters in “Strange Days” experienced. Or even better, we will be able to clone the movie experience of another person to understand why they hated it and you loved it. “Strange Days” indeed…

NOTE: At the time of publishing this article, Facebook had just acquired Oculus for $2 Billion.

2014 CES – A SPOTLIGHT ON VOXX INTERNATIONAL

DSC_1022

“Today you only see part of the action. Tomorrow you’ll see it all.”

That is what Voxx International is saying about the new 360Fly panoramic video camera. Current action cameras only capture 170 degrees, but with the new 360Fly, you see the entire circumference around you, like a fly. Hence the reason why they called it the “360Fly”.  That means you can capture everything behind you, as well. It’s perfect for all sports, especially for surfing or skiing, since it is easily mountible on a helmet or even a surfboard.

DSC_1021

The 360Fly can also used as a lifestyle camera.  You can attach it to your Smartphone or table tripod.  You can capture the action of an entire birthday party, not only of where the birthday boy or girl is blowing out the candles, but of everyone and everything around the cake that is happening in the background, as well. 2014 CES – INNOVATIVE PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT – “MYRIS”

DSC_1025

There was an abundance amount of technology at this year’s CES show, but definitely nothing more eye opening than “Myris”. This new innovative biometric technology from Eyelock, who is partnering with VOXX Electronics, will change the way we see identity security forever.

Meet “Myris’. It is the first ever consumer facing device featuring Eyelock’s patented iris identity authentication technology. It uses patented technology to convert your iris pattern to a code unique only to you. It grants access to your PC’s, e-commerce sites, applications and data in less than one second, all by taking a video scan of your iris.

IMG_3039

The circular device that fits in your hand plugs into a USB, set ups and links your accounts that you would like to secure.  For consumers, it could be computer login, online banking, e-mail access, social media, password management, and applications.  For enterprise, it could be used for computer login, bank tellers, opening accounts, money transfers, data centers, server racks…etc.

In today’s global world, where hackers just recently have broken in some of America’s biggest retail data bases, such as Target and Neiman Marcus, affecting millions of customers sensitive personal information, “Myris” couldn’t have come at a better time. The chances are 1 in 2 trillion for a false match. Only DNA is more accurate than Iris Identity Authentication.

No more reasons to remember passwords and usernames.

2014 CES – A SPOTLIGHT ON DTS

DSC_0766

At the 2014 CES show, dts was not only here to demonstrate their iconic surround sound, but also a new ground breaking technology that no sound aficionado enthusiast will not want to live without.

The new dts headphone: X.

DSC_0781

Though, dts already has licensed certain headphone makers the rights to manufacture their own headphones with this new technology, headphone X is not a new of brand of headphone. The “X” stands for any headphone that you choose to wear on your ears; including your favorite pair at home.

If you already own a favorite pair of high-end headphones, then there is no need to get another pair to replace them.

All of the preferable sound characteristics of the listener are stored on an application. The headphones are just playing what is being played through the application and device. Nothing is done with the headphones. They will support 2 channel, 5.1, 7.1 and 11.1 channel audio. It is also tightly integrated with DTS-HD and DTS Master Audio.

IMG_3325

I was able to hear their new technology at the demo booth (twice). The demo started with the typical sound check set-up of the dts speaker locations, without headphones, using an 11.1 speaker setup (a voice naming each channel was being utilized – left, right, center, rear channel speakers, etc).

When we were told to put the headphones on, the 11.1 speaker setup sound check was repeated. However, it sounded exactly the same, as though it was coming through the live speakers. I suspected audio trickery, so I immediately took the headphones off to see if the speakers were being utilized in the demo room, as well. They were not.

DSC_0783

Currently, dts has this technology on mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets. Eventually, it will revolutionize the home theatre segment in the near future. OEM’s of AV receivers will soon be able to utilize this technology making many next door neighbors who live to people like me very happy, since their adjoining walls will no longer rattle any more from lossless sound coming from my Home Theatre.

In the meantime, dts has reinvented the home theatre sound system, less 11 speakers and 2 subwoofers and a hundred feet of cable and speaker wire.

OSCAR NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 86TH ACADEMY AWARDS

Article by Marcus Siu

The Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday morning, and “American Hustle” and “Gravity”, led the pack with ten nominations each, followed closely behind by “12 Years a Slave” with nine.  “Captain Phillips”, “Dallas Buyer’s Club”, and Nebraska each had six nominations, and “Her” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” had five.

Along with Best Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay,  “American Hustle” was nominated in each of the acting categories, which has only happened 15 times since Oscar’s inception.  Ironically, it happened last year with “Silver Lining’s Playbook”, whose director, David O’Russell, who also directed “American Hustle”.  In his last two years, Russell has directed actors who have gone on to get an astounding eight Academy Award nominations.

For five time nominee, Amy Adams, it was the first time she was ever nominated in a leading role.  Likewise, for three time nominated Oscar winning actress from “Silver Linings Playbook”, Jennifer Lawrence, it was her first nomination in a supporting role. At 23 years old, she also becomes the youngest three time nominee ever.  Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper have been nominated previously, under the direction of David O’Russell’s previous films.

Alfonso Cuaron’s 3-D Science Fiction film masterpiece, “Gravity”, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, nabbed nominations for Best Picture, Director, and all of the technical categories, which has only happened five times.  James Cameron had quoted that this film was the “best space film ever done”.  To spur interest again to theatergoers, Warner Brothers decided to re-release “Gravity” in IMAX theatres on January 31st.

“12 Years a Slave” nabbed nine nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and two of the Acting categories.  Director Steve McQueen depicts a brutal depiction of slavery like no other film has done in a mainstream feature film.  Chiwetel Ejiofor and newcomer Lupita Nyong’o bravura performances breathed life into their unforgettable characters.  The film just took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama for a Motion Picture last Sunday.

It seems that Best Picture will be a tossup this year and can go to any of these three worthy films.  These risk-taking films are made with passion, integrity, and the highest level of artistry by some of the greatest filmmakers around the world.

This has been an excellent year for the small film. “Nebraska”, “The Dallas Buyer’s Club”, and “Her”, were definitely noticed by the Oscar voters.  Unfortunately, there is not enough slots to recognize many of the worthy films not nominated at all.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Actor Chris Hemsworth and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the nominations for the 86th Academy Awards yesterday (January 16).

Hemsworth and Boone Isaacs announced the nominees at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives.

Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in theirrespective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members on Saturday, January 25, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Active members of the Academy are eligible to vote for the winners in all categories.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on OscarSunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center  and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars, produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

OSCAR TALK WITH INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

Musical biopic movies are a tricky proposition for filmmakers.  Depending on how keen the audience’s perceptions are, especially musicians, the movie’s success, depends highly on how credible the actor is.  Actors aren’t usually musicians.  Musicians aren’t usually actors.  When you have someone playing the music directly in front of you without any trick film editing, that film becomes a type of documentary and the character becomes true to life.  The challenge is finding the right actor to play the role.  For example, it took 14 years to wrap up Taylor Hackfords “Ray”, mainly because they couldn’t find the perfect “Ray Charles” that would convince an audience, until Jamie Foxx came into the picture.

Casting an actor who plays a musician can be “uncast able”, as Joel Coen said at a recent screening for his latest movie.

“During the audition process, it was difficult to cast the lead title character.  They would first audition musicians who could not act.  Then they would audition actors who could play, but not to a credible level for the audience to believe the character.  We started interviewing actors who could play, but we thought may have written a part which was uncast able, until Oscar walked in the room.  Without him it was impossible to make the film.”

Enter Oscar Isaac, an actor trained at Julliard, who also played the memorable ex-con who was part of the failed heist with Ryan Gosling in “Drive”, co-starring Carey Mulligan.  Even more importantly, he was also a singer-songwriter and lead guitarist for “The Blinking Underdogs”, which helped prepared his character and musical pacing for the title role of “Inside Llewyn Davis”, collaborating with who he calls, the “Mr. Miyagi of Music”, the legendary producer extradonaire, T-Bone Burnett, reteaming again with the Coen Brothers for the fourth time.

Shot with a documentary feel to it, “Inside Llewyn Davis” is loosely based on the Dave Van Ronk’s memoirs, “The Mayor of MacDougal Street”.   It revolves around the redefining folk scene around New York City’s Village in the late 50’s, and it’s unknown directions of post Eisenhower America; just right before the likes of the trio of Peter, Paul and Mary or individuals, such as Bob Dylan came to existence. This was an era when musicians would try out and perform folk music in front of crowds, hopefully connecting with what they presented to their audience.

Without question, the supporting roles of every Coen Brothers film, seems to produce the memorable characters for the film. “Inside Llewyn Davis” is no exception.  In this case, John Goodman as Roland Turner, may be his zaniest role ever, even with all the insane characters that he has played over the years.  Garret Hedlund, whose last role as Dean Moriarty in Kerouack’s, “On the Road”, where he probably had to learn more lines from a script than any other actor ever on screen, barely had any in this one, but is impressionistic as Goodman’s driver, Johnny Five.  Mulligan and Timberlake make the best of their believable roles as folk musicians rounding off the cast.

Perhaps the best supporting role (uncredited) has to go to Ulysses, the cat.  Unfortunately, there were a few cat doubles, which is probably why the cat‘s name wasn’t headlined on the movie poster.

“Inside Llewyn Davis”, took the Grand Prix at Cannes last May, and deservedly so.

CINEQUEST 23 OPENS TONIGHT WITH SALLY POTTER’S LATEST “GINGER AND ROSA”

Cinequest proudly opens the 2013 festival with director Sally Potter’s (Orlando) new film. Elle Fanning, Alice Englert, Annette Bening and Christina Hendricks breathe life into 1960s London in this coming-of-age story.

BOMB_D06_1401-2
Inseparable best friends Ginger (Fanning) and Rosa (Englert) ditch their studies to engage in passionate discussions about politics, gender, sex, religion, and hairstyles. But when the Cuban Missile Crisis catalyzes their fears, the girls realize they are becoming less similar. While Ginger engrosses herself with thoughts of political turmoil, Rosa takes great interest in Ginger’s father (played by Alessandro Nivola). As the fear of the Cold War grips the world and the girls flirt with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, they also begin to assert themselves during the sexual revolution. Nothing will ever be the same again.Potter beautifully weaves the tales of growing girls with their intimate conflicts, against a backdrop of global catastrophe. Through their brilliantly subtle performances, both Fanning and Englert take center stage, while a top-notch supporting cast adds a perfect balance to a story that depicts precisely the meaning of youth and of discovering who we are.

Here’s the trailer.

PREDICTIONS FOR THE 85TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS

Article by Marcus Siu

As it looks right now, “Argo” has become the forerunner for “Best Picture” at this year’s Academy Awards.  The film has taken every single major Best Picture Award, including the Golden Globes, Directors Guild of America, and Producers Guild of America.

However, it’s director/star, Ben Affleck name was not mentioned when they read the list of nominees for “Best Director” when the Academy Award nominations were announced early last month.

Showing no bitterness at all, Affleck joked at the Golden Globes that no one felt he was snubbed for an acting nomination on “Argo,” in which he gives one of his finest performances as a CIA agent orchestrating a scheme to disguise the Americans as a Hollywood film crew scouting locations in Iran.

ARGO

Ben Affleck gets the word that he was snubbed by the Academy at this years Academy Awards for Best Director for “Argo”.

For the Actor categories, Daniel Day-Lewis for “Lincoln” for Best Actor is a no-brainer, as he was the heart and soul of the film directed by Steven Spielberg.  He tranformed light into Tony Kushner’s amazing screenplay that brought all the best character actors in Hollywood into a history in the making ; the passing of the 13th Ammendment into life.  Much of Hollywood’s best character actors showcase themselves, alongside the scene stealing Tommy Lee Jones, who deserves to take the Oscar tonight for Best Supporting Actor.

For the Actress categories, Jennifer Lawrence has taken every major “Best Actress” award, including SAG, Golden Globes, and just recently, the Spirit Awards.  However, I am predicting that Emmanuelle Riva, the oldest actress to be ever nominated at 85, will surprise everyone and pull an upset.  I feel the Academy wants to honor, the French Film, “Amour” more than just a “Best Foreign Film”, since it had been nominated for six major categories, including Best Picture.  I also feel that the Academy knows that the 22 year old Lawrence has many more chances to win an Oscar, since she has many roles lined up ahead of her then the elderly, Riva.

Anne Hathaway will be the shoo-in winner for Best Supporting Actress for “Les Miserables” as Fantine.

Since Affleck wasn’t nominated for Best Director, the Academy will probably give it to Steven Spielberg for “Lincoln”.  David O. Russell would be a close runner up for “Silver Linings Playbook”, but I think the Academy will decide on giving him the Best Original Screenplay award instead.

For Best Animated Film, I chose Pixar’s “Brave”, since it has all the elements of a classic film in the Disney tradition.  It’s a little more conservative than Disney’s “Wreck-it Ralph”, about video game characters coming to life, which took home the “Annie’s”, but may not be as suitable to the Academy’s taste.

Quentin Tarentino should pick up another Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Django Unchained”, no matter what Spike Lee thinks.

Adele will help celebrate James Bond’s 50th birthday bash to win a few Oscars for Agent 007 tonight, as she it will definitely win for the title song from “Skyfall”.  It should take Best Sound Editing, as well.  I am also hoping for it to win Best Cinematography for the great Roger Deakins (“Fargo”, “Shawshank Redemption”, “No Country for Old Men”), who has been nominated ten times without winning one. He is definitely due.

Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” will certainly take the Visual Effects Award.  (Who knew that was a CGI Tiger on the boat?)  It should also take Best Music Score, as well.  If they don’t give the cinematography award to “Skyfall”, then they will give it to “Life of Pi”.

Here’s to you, Ben!

Argo

Congratulations to Academy Award Ben Affleck who will most likely win Best Picture for “Argo”. He will be only the fourth director in Oscar history to have not been nominated for a Best Picture winner. The last film to win without a director nomination was in 1989 for “Driving Miss Daisy”.
