CELEBRATION

No matter what event or film you attend at Cinequest Film Festival, as it’s been for the past 23 years, there’s always reason to celebrate. We begin the festival with an electric evening on February 26, with Sally Potter’s (Orlando) latest, Ginger & Rosa, starring Elle Fanning, Alice Englert, Annette Bening, and Christina Hendricks in the emotionally charged story of two young women coming of age in 1960s London during the Cold War and the sexual revolution. This irresistible tale, set against the backdrop of potential global, nuclear devastation, will take place in the palatial California Theatre at 7 p.m., immediately followed by the Opening Night party at the Corinthian Event Center. Throughout the festival, there will be over 20 VIP Soirees and Maverick Meetups to stoke up the fun. And don’t miss the Maverick Spirit Award presentation to Chef Dominique Crenn at The Fairmont San Jose on Friday, March 8, from 5-7 p.m., as she takes us on a culinary journey in her vastly inventive fusion of creativity and culinary innovation. An evening of artful hors d’oeuvres, delectably complex wines, and a conversation moderated by KCBS’s food expert Liam Mayclem will whet any attendee’s appetite. We close the festival on two of the highest notes. The Closing Night event will showcase Midnight’s Children, an epic story overflowing with romance, fantasy, humor, and magic, featuring the momentous collaboration between Deepa Mehta and world-renowned novelist Salman Rushdie who wrote the screenplay based on his own Booker Prize-award-winning book. Rushdie will receive Cinequest’s Maverick Spirit Award following the screening. After the closing awards presentation, we will celebrate the night away at The Tech Museum of Innovation, sponsored and catered by Black Tie Fine Catering. But as is the case with any major celebration you don’t want to end, we will continue the festivities with Encore Day on Sunday, March 10. Cap off your tremendous Cinequest experience with an encore screening of the festival’s award-winning and audience favorite films, while also enjoying culinary offerings from the top Bay Area’s gourmet food trucks.

INNOVATION

At the core of Cinequest is the spirit of breaking the norm, extending the boundaries, and challenging accepted ideas to improve communities. At Cinequest Film Festival 23, we will showcase every film with Sony 4K or Barco projection technologies, offering audiences and artists a thrilling, leading-edge movie experience. In true Cinequest fashion, audiences will have breathtaking opportunities to see three cinematic masterpieces restored to a splendor light years beyond the best available theatrical experiences when the films were released: David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (March 2 at 1:15 p.m.), Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (March 6 at 7:15 p.m.), and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove (March 9 at 1:00 p.m.). But while we recognize these glorious films from the past, we will also showcase the freshest talent in the industry. Join Spartan Films and their student filmmakers on Tuesday, March 5 at 9:30 p.m. in this spotlight event that includes a sneak-peak screening of their latest Always Learning, preceded by interviews with Spartan Films’ principals, Barnaby Dallas and Nick Martinez, plus the directors of All About Dad and Super Hero Party Clown.

Cinequest Picture the Possibilities (PTP) presents the world premiere of their second season of the global youth’s work from Silicon Valley and New York, to Mexico City, Jakarta, and Beijing. On Sunday March 3, our youth connect with global leaders in a conversation about the steps they passionately feel will create a better tomorrow. Preceding the premieres will be the launch of the 7 Powers of Creating book, highlighting the tools necessary for creation, from art, to science, to business. At the center of where creativity meets innovation, Cinequest presents the dynamic Artist & Innovator (A&I) Forums where esteemed art and entertainment leaders meet their counterparts from innovation and business for revolutionary discussions and visual presentations focusing on cutting-edge topics.

INSPIRATION

Harrison Ford (Witness, Indiana Jones, Star Wars and much more) is, without question, one of cinema’s most iconic actors, approaching his art with a brilliant array of integrity, commitment, profound charisma, and authority. Join Cinequest on Sunday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. for a riveting evening with Mr. Ford, as we present him our Maverick Spirit Award. Event moderated by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, CEO of Girls Club Entertainment and director of Miss Representation.

Though film is primarily a visual medium, everything experienced in cinema began as words flowing across a page, emerging from a writer’s imagination. At the Writers Celebration, join conversations with Academy Award-winner Bobby Moresco (Crash) and several other movers and shakers in the screenwriting world for a dynamic event from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. Adding to these inspiring events, the entire line up of emotionally involving films showcase the strength, perseverance, and courage needed to achieve one’s dreams and the driving forces that motivate each individual. Andy Garcia (Ocean’s 11, The Untouchables) and San Franciscan interior designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and San Franciscan ballet dancer Lorena Feijoo, alongside many others help create Cubamerican, a spirited narration covering 60 years of those who fled Cuba during the Revolution and how they’ve become one of the most impactful groups of the last half century. Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton as Himself is an inspirational and fascinating journey through the life of a man who seemingly did it all. Bay Area residents will revel in Stable Life, a compelling story of high-stakes, family dynamics, immigration, and life on the racetrack. And for those who believe “it” just can’t be done, we are lucky to have the world premiere of Wampler’s Ascent as Steve Wampler refuses to allow any physical or mental obstacles stand in his way. An emotionally stirring story, it documents Wampler’s journey to become the first man with Cerebral Palsy to scale Yosemite’s granite monolith, El Capitan.  Regardless of film lovers’ choice, Cinequest 23 offers films that fill the entire emotional spectrum, some of which may inspire them, or someone they know, to go beyond the confines of the norm, to do something extraordinary.

THRILLS

A powerful storyline, suspenseful music, and a cloak of mystery are elements that thrill. We’ve lined up the perfect blend of action, suspense, and disguises to have even the most seasoned audiences white-knuckling the arms of their seats. The world premiere of Chris Penn’s (Reservoir Dogs) final film Aftermath, starring Anthony Michael Hall (The Dead Zone), Tony Danza (The Practice), Elisabeth Rohm (Heroes), and Frank Whaley (Pulp Fiction) is a powerhouse thriller where a man finds himself plummeting down a slippery slope of violence and hired hit men when one of his employees goes missing. From our usual treasure trove of Chinese cinema comes An Inaccurate Memoir, one of the most intriguing films of the year. The Far East meets Wild West action in this breathtakingly visual and poetic tale of a group of bandits taking on the Japanese government during Japan’s occupation of China. Cinequest is honored to present the critically-acclaimed Eden, starring Jamie Chung (Suckerpunch, Once Upon A Time) in the intense tale of a kidnapped woman fighting against all odds to save herself. Rounding out some of the notable Thrills films is the world premiere of Sparks. Great power breeds greater villains in this groundbreaking and stylized superhero noir film, starring Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End), Clancy Brown (Shawshank Redemption), Jake Busey (Starship Troopers), Clint Howard (Apollo 13), Ashley Bell (The Last Exorcism), Marina Squerciati (Gossip Girls), and William Katt (Carrie, The Greatest American Hero). Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or simply want to remember what goose bumps feel like, these Thrills films will fit the bill.

LAUGHS

Laugh ‘til it hurts – that’s always Cinequest’s aim for its comedy line-up and this year is no exception. In fact, we have an awesome slate of humor lined up for CQFF23. Laura Prepon (That ‘70s Show) and Dreama Walker (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23) star in The Kitchen, an ensemble, break-neck romp that truly gives meaning to the phrase “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!” We also the have world premieres of 7 Lives of Chance, Congratulations!, Leave of Absence, Lonely Boy, The Space Jockey Pursuit, and Twenty Million People. Ranging from the psychedelic comedy involving a red balloon to the delightfully twisted, romantic misadventures of a schizophrenic, the Laughs sections will giddily underscore its moniker and breathe some hearty guffaws into what will be a roaring good time.

LIFE

Our most powerful program, Life, explores the inner emotions, conflicting, uplifting, messy, and mysterious, that are such an integral part of the human condition. Leading off, Academy Award-winner Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive, No Country for Old Men) and Matthew Fox (Lost) star in Emperor, centered on a weighty decision General Douglas MacArthur must make when Japanese Emperor Hirohito surrenders to the Allied Forces, marking the end of WWII. Chapman beautifully captures the throes of first loves and their vital importance in discovering one’s place in the world, starring Jesse Johnson (Killing Lincoln), Chris Masterson (Malcolm in the Middle), Christine Woods (FlashForward), and Caitlin Thompson (Crazy, Stupid, Love.). Thomas Vinterberg directs The Hunt, featuring the incomparable Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) ― awarded Best Actor at Cannes for this performance ― in an intense tale of an innocent man wrongly accused of a horrendous act. Alongside this star-studded line-up and the plethora of amazing films, we have the distinct honor to host the world premiere of Idomeneo, Mozart’s personal favorite of all his operas. Presented by The Packard Humanities Institute, the recorded live performance by Opera San Jose screens at the California Theatre on Sunday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m.

LOVE

It would be impossible for Cinequest to bring our audiences electrifying and dynamic programs year after year without a whole lot of love; love for artists, innovators, film lovers, and everyone else who adores and is passionate about cinematic art. This year, Cinequest 23 will present an extra-special selection of films evoking love in all its myriad guises and glory, from heart-felt romance and touching comedies, to the eternal and the sensual. James Cromwell (Star Trek: First Contact, American Horror Story, Babe) and Geneviève Bujold (Dead Ringers, Coma) bring tour-de-force performances to Still, a deeply affecting love story about a man attempting to provide a comfortable home for his new wife, until a government inspector makes it his personal mission to halt the construction. On the lighter side of love, One Small Hitch is a hilarious romantic comedy where one seemingly innocent white lie turns into a sticky web of deceit that’s far more trouble than the liar could have ever imagined. And in one of the most mysterious and evocative films this year, Natalie Zea (Justified, The Following) stars in Sweet Talk, where an unexpected phone call leads to unlikely destinations and resounding proof that romance can be as true as you want it to be.

LARRY ELLISON DELIVERS OPENING KEYNOTE AT 2012 ORACLE OPENWORLD IN SAN FRANCISCO – INTRODUCES LATEST ORACLE DATABASE12C

Article and photos by Marcus Siu

“Oracle is committed to delivering services to all three services to the cloud… buy your applications as a service, buy your database and middleware as a service, and buy your storage & servers, also as a service”.

Larry Ellison delivered his opening keynotes for the 30th Oracle OpenWorld at Moscone Center on Sunday evening to the full capacity crowd, part of the 50,000 expected for the five day conference.

Ellison announced Oracle’s latest database, “The Oracle 12c”, which took several years to develop, providing superior security, control and efficiency for software services delivered from the cloud.  The database also contains separate memory and processes in it.

Ellison also calls it a “multitenant data base for the cloud”.

Ellison’s second announcement was in regards to Oracle extending cloud services:

“The Oracle Private Cloud that was idea born from conversation with the banking industry, who due to regulations were restricted in their ability to leverage cloud services. Oracle will now extend cloud services behind a customer’s firewall, they can leverage the same cost savings for we will set up, manage and monitor the environment within their own data centre or ours if they so wish. The best part is, this Private Cloud offering is seamlessly connected to the Oracle Cloud and gives customers a sense of reliability with Platinum support, 15 minutes response time,” Ellison announced.

Ellison also demonstrated through his slideshow presentation that clouds are very similar to utility/electrical grids, as clouds require more distribution of data, and will eventually lower demand for the need for servers.

“You might be legally required or just have a preference to store that data behind your firewall, but still take advantage of the benefit that that we pay for the servers, software, we manage it and continue to upgrade it, and we charge you a simple monthly fee.”

Ellison’s remarks regarding the new X3: “The hardware foundation of the Oracle Cloud is the Exadata version 3 – Exadata X3 is designed to store all your data bases in memory.  Single Exadata X3 rack has 26 terabytes of memory… then we compress the data by a factory of ten… 220 Terabytes of your data in a single X3 rack…That’s an astonishing numbe. You virtually never use your disk drives. Everything is in semiconductor memory.”

Ellison closed out his keynotes with the following remark:

“The reason we’re making these things faster is to improve not just their peak performance, but improve their cost performance.”, “You’ll save so much money in storage because of our compression…with a new generation of clouds are going to deliver answers faster than you ever can imagine was possible because of the X3 “database in memory machine”; the world’s fastest computer for business.”

Opening and Closing Night Galas
This year’s festival opens on Thursday, October 4 with two films: SILVER LININGS
PLAYBOOK at the CinéArts@Sequoia in Mill Valley at 7:00 PM and 7:15 PM and ON
THE ROAD at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael at 6:30 PM

Jack Kerouac’s alter-ego, Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), shambles after manic, ecstatic Dean Moriarity (Garrett Hedlund) as they crisscross the country fueled by Benzadrine-laced tea, hot barroom jazz and a desire for sensory kicks in Walter Salles’ masterful adaptation of the generation-defining novel, “On the Road”.

Following the two screenings, special guests and audiences will celebrate at the
Opening Night Gala featuring local wineries, breweries and Marin chefs preparing farmto-
table cuisine, held at Mill Valley’s Downtown Plaza, from 9.30 p.m. The Opening Night

The 17th Annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival

July 12-15, 2012 at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre

It was quiet of surprise when the Oscar nominations were announced this year.  Ten nominations went to a silent film that was filmed entirely in black-and-white.  From the media buzz it received at the Cannes Film Festival last year, the surprise hit turned into a big success at this year’s Oscars. “The Artist” went on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, and Best Director for Michael Hazanavicius. The last time a silent movie was awarded for an Oscar for Best Picture was 83 years ago; the World War I saga “Wings”.

Not surprisingly, “Wings”, flies its way back and returns to the big screen as the Opening night film at this year’s 17thAnnual 2012 San Francisco Silent Film Festival on Thursday, July 12th. Restored by Paramount Pictures, the first Academy Award winner in 1929 has plenty of action and romance, along with some extraordinary visual effects, including some amazing aerial dogfight scenes. Directed by William A. Wellman and accompanied live at the classic Castro Theatre, with the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra with Foley sound effects by the multiple Academy Award recipient, Ben Burtt.

Wings: Jobyna Ralston (Sylvia Lewis).

Here is the trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqOqXj2biG0

For those who are going for silent era stars, the festival offers movies with Pola Negri (The Spanish Dancer), Douglas Fairbanks (The Mark of Zorro), Emil Jannings (The Loves of Pharaoh) and Buster Keaton as an actor and co-director of “The Cameraman”.

For those who are interested in movies from around the globe, the festival offers Chinese, German, British, in addition to American masterpieces.

For those who are going for genre the festival offers German Expressionism (Pandora’s Box) , Avant-Garde ( The Overcoat), Comedy (Mantrap) and even Animated (Irrepressible Felix the Cat!) movies.

Whatever it is that attracts you, there will be unforgettable live Cinema experience along with live music accompanied by great musicians: Denis James on the Mighty Wurlitzer, Stephen Horne and Donald Sosin on the grand piano; Alloy Orchestra, Matti Bye Ensemble and Toychestra.

The San Francisco Silent Film Festival Award will be presented to the Telluride Film Festival for their longtime dedication to the preservation and exhibition of silent film. Telluride Directors Tom Luddy, Gary Meyer, and Julie Huntsinger will accept the award onstage at the 2:30 pm screening of THE CANADIAN on Saturday, July 14.

The Canadian: Thomas Meighan, Mona Palma.

Also participating this year is celebrated actor and silent film aficionado Paul McGann (WITHNAIL AND I, DR. WHO, LUTHER). As accompaniment to Frank Hurley’s magnificent documentary SOUTH, McGann will read the letters of Ernest Shackleton to Stephen Horne’s elegiac score on the grand piano. SOUTH shows Saturday, July 14 at 5:00 pm.

The San Francisco-based team team responsible for the production of the exquisite frame-by-frame restoration of PANDORA’S BOX, David Ferguson and Angela Holm, will be introduced at the Saturday, July 14 presentation of the film. Also, be prepared to see some some amazing before and after footage that will be shown before the feature.

Pandora’s Box: Louise Brooks (Lulu).

The waters were tested. Silent movies are making a comeback and are now becoming the trend.  The Silent Film Festival 2012 deserves every bit of your attention.

17 SFSFF starts on July 12 and will ends on July 15.

WHO WILL TAKE HOME THE OSCAR?

MLS Entertainment predicts the 84th Academy Awards

Jean Dujardin as George Valentin and Berenice Bejo as Peppy Miller in Michel Hazanavicius's film THE ARTIST. Photo by: The Weinstein Company.

Article by Marcus Siu

This will be the year of “The Artist”.  The film that took the major awards at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, known as the “love letter to Hollywood’s Golden Age”, will also take most of the major Academy Awards tonight, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), and Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius).   This will be the first time a “silent movie” has taken “Best Picture” since the first Academy Award ceremony in 1927, when “Wings” took home the statuette, which ironically is the same year that “The Artist” takes place.

The other nine nominated films have pretty much no chance of pulling an upset.

Jean Dujardin as George Valentin in Michel Hazanavicius's film THE ARTIST. Photo by: The Weinstein Company.

Obviously, “The Artist” was not nominated in the Sound categories, but if the Academy gets it right, “The Artist” should also take awards for Cinematography, Original Score (not including uncredited music from the soundtrack of “Vertigo”), and Costume.  It has very good chances of also winning for Film Editing and Original Screenplay, as well.

Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer, left) shares a laugh with her best friend Aibileen Clark (Academy Award® nominee Viola Davis, right), in DreamWorks Pictures’ inspiring drama, “The Help,” based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Kathryn Stockett. “The Help” is written for the screen and directed by Tate Taylor, with Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan producing. Ph: Dale Robinette. ©DreamWorks II Distribution Co., LLC. All Rights Reserved.

Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer from “The Help”, who portray two African American maids working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi in the 60’s, should take home the Best Actress and Supporting Actress Oscars, though, Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) and Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) are both equally deserving for their roles they immersed themselves in, and would have won easily any other year.  Unfortunately, for Streep, the two-time Oscar winner (and 14 time Oscar loser), portrayed (ex Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher) a global icon, who is not everyone’s cup of tea.  It also helps Davis, to have been in another Best Picture nominated film, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”.

The Supporting Actor Oscar will definitely go to Christopher Plummer in his “coming out of the closet/terminally ill” role as “Hal Fields”, in Mike Mill’s, “Beginner’s”.   He also had a nice supporting role in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, to top it off a great year.

Academy Award® nominee Christopher Plummer stars in writer/director Mike Mills' Beginners, a Focus Features release. Photo Credits: Andrew Tepper.

I’m hoping the Academy will add a new visual effects for “3D” category in a few years, so more visually films like Hugo, would be made using 3D cameras during filming, rather than utilizing 3D in post production.   After a screening that James Cameron attended, he called the film a “masterpiece” and told Martin Scorsese it was the best use of 3D he had seen, including his own films.

In any case, “Hugo” will probably take a few of the Production categories, including Art Direction, Sound Editing and Mixing.  It may also win Visual Effects, if the Academy doesn’t decide to “go totally ape” on us.

As for “The Descendents”, kudos to George Clooney, in possibly his best role to date.  If there was a category this year for Best Actor in a “talkie” movies, he would have gotten it for sure.  Like Streep, he just gets better and better each role he takes on.  However, they will most likely honor “The Descendents” with a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, that will deservedly go to writer-director, Alexander Payne, who was nominated in both categories this year.

As far as the Original Screenplay, I’m really hoping to see Woody Allen accept it for his nostalgic and whimsical hit, “Midnight in Paris”.  He has major competition from “The Artist”, which like his film, is also set in the 20’s, but in Paris instead of Hollywood.  Either way, the Golden Age wins.

CES2012: JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE’S MYSPACE AND PANASONIC ANNOUNCES NEW PARTNERSHIP AT CES

Photos by Marcus Siu

MYSPACE AND PANASONIC PARTNER TO UNVEIL NEW SOCIAL TV SERVICE

Delivers social experience through over-the-top platform across 2012 Panasonic VIERA Connect-enabled HDTVs

CES 2012 – LAS VEGAS (January 9, 2012)  Myspace (www.myspace.com), a leading social entertainment destination that lets artists and fans share and discover content, today announced the launch of Myspace TV, a new service that makes the television experience social. Available on the next generation of Panasonic VIERA Connect™-enabled HDTVs, Myspace TV puts viewers in control by allowing them to discover, share and comment on the programs they’re viewing.

Initial channels on Myspace TV will be music-focused, leveraging Myspace’s unparalleled music rights and leading library of 100,000 music videos and 42 million songs. Myspace TV will expand beyond music, however, to encompass movies, news, sports and reality channels, with a growing lineup of today’s most popular broadcast and on-demand content. Audiences will not only be able to view their favorite television programs, but Myspace TV will also allow them to chat about what they’re viewing while they’re viewing it and invite friends to watch with them virtually. The platform fully integrates social and television in new ways that add a dimension to content discovery and evolve the traditional television experience. A companion app will be available on tablets and smartphones, providing instant sync capabilities for a seamless experience.

“Myspace was the first successful social network because it allowed individuals to share their interests, listen to music, express their creativity and connect around the things they love,” said Myspace CEO Tim Vanderhook. “Historically, TV has been a shared experience, as people gathered together to watch their favorite programs. Our belief was that we could enhance the TV experience by increasing viewers’ ability to connect to both content and each other. By partnering with Panasonic, we’re bringing together the content that people love and a social experience in one service: Myspace TV.”

Myspace co-owner Justin Timberlake added, “We’re ready to take television and entertainment to the next step by upgrading it to the social networking experience. Why text or email your friends to talk about your favorite programs after they’ve aired when you could be sharing the experience with real-time interactivity from anywhere across the globe? As the plot of your favorite drama unfolds, the joke of your favorite SNL character plays, or even the last second shot of your favorite team swishes the net, we’re giving you the opportunity to connect your friends to your moments as they’re actually occurring. This is the evolution of one of our greatest inventions, the television. And, we no longer have to crowd around the same one to experience it together.”

Myspace TV intends to return the diminishing social element of television by connecting viewers around content, simplifying discovery by creating fan communities empowered to comment, rate, chat and invite friends to view programming together in real-time.

Launching in the first half of 2012, Myspace TV’s over-the-top television service will be offered across the Panasonic VIERA Connect platform. VIERA Connect is Panasonic’s connected TV platform, which offers access to Internet-based video-on-demand content and applications, ranging from news and fitness, to social networking and online gaming. VIERA Connect requires no external box or PC1 and is accessed via a single button on the television remote control.

“Year after year, Panasonic’s VIERA Connect Smart VIERA TV platform has continued to expand rapidly but with a singular focus to deliver to our consumers an extremely robust and interactive connected TV experience that can be customized and enjoyed on their large-screen HDTVs,” said Joseph Taylor, Chairman & CEO, Panasonic Corporation of North America. “We are proud to partner with the new Myspace on the debut of Myspace TV on our VIERA Connect Smart TV platform. By partnering with a brand like Myspace on the VIERA Connect Smart TV platform, we’re taking connected TV to a whole new level of engaging, interactive experiences for consumers.”

Myspace is currently inviting a select audience to participate in the beta launch of its TV service through a fully integrated experience on laptop devices. To be considered for invitation, entertainment fans can submit their information at http://www.myspace.com/tv. Get a glimpse of Myspace TV on Panasonic Smart VIERA HDTVs by visiting the Panasonic booth located in the Las Vegas Convention Center Central Hall #9405.

LARRY ELLISON HITS IT OUT OF THE PARK AT ORACLE OPEN WORLD OPENING KEYNOTES

The 2011 Oracle Open World Opening Keynotes kicked off with Judith Sim, Senior VP and Chief Marketing Officer of Oracle, giving some amazing statistics about the company’s annual event.  For example, Oracle Open World has built the largest technology conference in the world: 475 exhibiting partners on show fl0or, 400 Oracle demo ground stations, 520,000 square feet of exhibit space, three exhibit show floors, 2,400 sessions, and 1,600 customer speakers.

However, even with those extraordinary numbers from Oracle Open World,  the most impressive stats came from CEO, Larry Ellison, as he was presented a World Championship ring from San Francisco Giants’s owner and President, Larry Baer, just before his Opening Keynotes Sunday night.  It was well deserved.  Ellison remarked to the bewildered audience, “A lot of people are probably a little surprised that I’m getting this ring, but if you were paying attention, you would realize that I did hit .305 last year, and I was 2nd in the voting for he Golden Glove”.

The performance numbers were even more impressive with the Oracle Customer Care studies.  Sometimes up to 50X -60X better in performance improvement.

Just like the World Championship San Francisco Giants’ proudly display banners of their  All-Stars at AT&T Park, Oracle has done the same this year by putting their super products, “Exadata” and  “Exalogic”, and now their latest, the “SPARC SuperCluster”, on busses, billboards and banners that adorn the Moscone Center and are decorated throughout the city.

Last year, at Oracle’s Open World, their banners prominently read “Software Hardware Complete”.   This year it reads, “Hardware and Software – Engineered to Work Together”.

“The acquisition of Sun transforms the IT industry, combining best-in-class enterprise software and mission-critical computing systems,” remarked Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, after the Sun Microsystems purchase nearly three years ago. “Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up.”

After returning to the stage after the “ring ceremony”, Ellison explained how Oracle was able to achieve two main goals:  to make their hardware faster and cheaper, comparing it against IBM’s fastest computer; the IBM 795.

“Parallel Everything…the idea of engineering the hardware and the software, all of it, so it works together, should give us the opportunity to deliver better performance, and a lower cost, better ease of use, better security, better reliability, across the board, if we engineer all the separate pieces  to work together.  That’s the whole idea behind “Exadata”, “Exalogic”, and all of these engineered systems”.

In addition, hybrid columnar compression is used.

“If you compress the data, magic things happen .  We move 1/10 as much data ten times faster.  That means we’re moving from a logical data standpoint, moving data off of storage and into database processors 100X faster.”

Ellison also announced the latest “SPARC SuperCluster”,  which also features “Parallel Everything Architecture”.  It also has the latest SPARC T4 microprocessor, which is faster for Java compared to the IBM P7, and runs on the latest Solaris 11 operating system, but is also backwards compatible with the Solaris 10.

By the way, the “SPARC SuperCluster” is twice as fast for a quarter of the price.

Lastly, Ellison also unveiled Oracle’s latest engineering system; the “Exalytics Business Intelligence Machine”, which provides instantaneous speed of thought analytics, and a powerful new user interface.

Perhaps, next fall, the Major League Baseball commissioner should come by and pay a visit to the Moscone Center to present Ellison the MVP award for the numbers he put up at this years Opening Keynotes address.  They were quite impressive, indeed.

In addition to the opening Keynote with CEO, Larry Ellison, the rest of the week’s keynotes is as follows:

Monday, October 3rd, 8am to 9:45am: Mark Hurd, President of Oracle and Thomas Kurian, Excutive VP, Product Development of Oracle give their Keynote “Extreme Innovation” and Joseph M. Tucci, Chairman, President, and ECO of EMC will  give his keynote on “Cloud + Big Data – Massive Change + Massive Opportunity”.

Tuesday, October 4th, 8am to 9:45am: Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO of Dell, Inc will give the Dell Keynote, and John Fowler, Excutive VP, Systems and Edward Screvan, Chief Corporate Architect from Oracle will give their keynote, “Engineered Systems”.

Wednesday, October 5th at 8am to 9:45am: Steve Miranda, Senior VP, Applications Development at Oracle will give the keynote, “Oracle Applications: Complete Solutions, Complete Choices”, and John Chambers, Chairman and CEO of Cisco, will give his keynote, “Empowering Customers Through Datacenter Transformation.  Together we Innovate”.

Wednesday, October 5th at 2:45pm to 4:30: Larry Ellison will make another keynote appearance and speak about “Oracle Cloud Computing”, and S.D. Shibulal, CEO and Managing Director at Infosys will give his keynote, “Accelerating Growth: New Paradigms”.
